피노키오 (Pinocchio Final)

Good news: Pinocchio aired three episodes last week.
Bad news: It included the finale.

Ki Ha Myung puts his sunbaes to shame when he pointed out the implications of the whole good news vs. bad news choice scenario. Everyone learned a thing or two from this country mutt turned fierce reporter wolf. Song Cha Ok’s comment was spot on. Ki Ha Myung really has a knack for embarrassing people in a good way.

Pinocchio is probably one of the best revenge stories I’ve seen, not just on a technical level but in its emotional draw. Indeed, the best kind of revenge is by being the better person – not just better than the person who hurt you but better than the person you once were. Ki Ha Myung struggled to overcome hatred but In Ha was a great personification of the driving force that would make even the angriest man think twice and choose the better path.
The show somehow dropped its intensity after the brothers’ arc but that doesn’t mean that it has totally lost its spark. There were still plenty of things going on even though we could only get to see Ki Jae Myung during visitation hours.

It’s quite hard to take his I Can Hear Your Voice’s Park Soo Ha character off my mind but Lee Jong Suk succeeded in defining Dal Po/Ki Ha Myung’s personalities. He’s just brilliant all throughout.

And Behind every great man is a woman…

Park Shin Hye is one of the most natural looking and dramatically convincing actresses her age and as Choi In Ha, she shows how to be the right kind of heroine. Ki Ha Myung wouldn’t have tried becoming a reporter if it weren’t for In Ha’s dream in the first place.

I love the romance in this drama. The leads have this undeniable chemistry that creates a huge amount of cute, funny, and endearing moments. And thanks for giving us decent kissing scenes. Lee Jong Suk and Park Shin Hye looked so good together, I wouldn’t mind if they end up dating in real life.

Kim Young Kwang looks like a mix of Kim Woo Bin,Lee Seung Gi, and Lee Kwang Soo. I’ve seen him in several dramas such as Bachelor’s Vegetable Store, Love Rain, and Good Doctor. So far, he’s a pretty average actor but he did have some shining moments as Seo Bum Jo. Why can’t all chaebol sons be just as gentle and earnest as him. Yes Kim Tan and Choi Young Do, I’m looking at you!

Ki Ha Myung and Beom Ju’s subtle bromance was fun to watch but I like Ha Myung and Ahn Chan Soo’s snarky satoori bromance more.

The actor with a stronger charisma is Lee Pil Mo. As Cap Hwang Gyo Dong, he has the mysterious yet adorable sunbae aura just like his character in Emergency Couple. Lee Yoo Bi’s character wouldn’t have shown some growth if it weren’t for their cute connections.

On the side of the wicked, MSC’s fogey director is irredeemable but Song Cha Ok still possesses some remaining vulnerability in her. Sometimes, life puts us in a tight spot and pushes us to make an irreversible decision that we’d always regret, but in the end, we are who we are. She may have been a vile manipulating witch but she was once a reporter and is still a mother. She deserves harsher punishment but somehow, I’m also satisfied with the ending because Ki Ha Myung was able to beat her at her own game without having to stoop down her level.

Who would’ve thought that a bigger evil was behind the conspiracy. I’ve been watching Kim Hae Sook since Autumn in my Heart. This versatile veteran thespian is too good to be just a comic relief so I was glad to see her come out as the orchestrator of it all. There were many ways to bring her down but it’s most heartbreaking when the things you’ve worked so hard for and the luxury you’ve gone so evil for would also cost you the son that you treasure the most. That’s exactly the kind of pain that she deserves. No matter how greedy a businesswoman she is, her stage mother personality was never an act. She does love her son dearly but perhaps a little too much.

In the end, the core of the show is truly about family.

I also grew up in a society that puts family above all else and the show reiterates the importance of strong ties. No matter how much hatred we’ve been keeping inside, if we receive love from family, then it would be easier to move on. God knows how many times I wanted to inflict suffering to the people who have once caused me pain but because I’m surrounded by so much love from family and friends, eventually, I was able to let go and be the better person just like Ki Ha Myung.

Now all I need is a male version of Choi In Ha in my life. Huh, good luck finding an honest man out there. If the Pinocchio syndrome were real, lots of people would probably die from excessive hiccupping!
